Finds from the Vogelherd cave

Reindeer or Lion

This ivory sculpture was reconstructed from three separate pieces recovered from different layers in Vogelherd cave. Nearly all of the body is covered with exceptionally clear-cut indentations. The figurine cannot be fully identified. It could be either a reindeer or a feline. Unfortunately, the head is missing. It could have been intentionally dismembered to demonstrate how to cut up the animal. On the other hand, this figure might be associated with story telling.
