Human Statuette

Menschenfigur
Photo: Hilde Jensen, University of Tübingen

This statuette carved from mammoth ivory is often regarded as a representation of a human being. Perhaps one should rather call it an anthropomorphic, humanlike body. The head stands out distinctly from the body. The body is covered with indented rows of dots and lines. It also might be an unfinished ivory pendant. The neck and shoulder cut might reveal an early stage in the course of the work.
