Finds from the Vogelherd cave Hindquarters of a Mammoth ![]() Photo: Hilde Jensen, University of Tübingen Only the tail end and hind legs remain from this sculpture. The rest of it was broken off while it was still in use. Due to the form of the back and the legs, this sculpture is interpreted as representing a mammoth. The reconstruction of this sculpture gives an original length of approx. 10 cm and a height of approx. 7,5 cm in which case it would be the largest sculpture from the Vogelherd. Rows of notches and cross-marks are engraved on the oval soles of the sculpture’s feet. Like most other figurines, this one is also carved from mammoth ivory. However, it was not fashioned with much care, which might have something to do with its original size.
