Finds from the Vogelherd cave

Mammoth Bas-Relief

Mammut-Halbrelief
Photo: Hilde Jensen, University of Tübingen

This is a unique find, since the carving is made of bone. The oval pendant was probably shaped from the pelvic bone of a large animal.
Its surface was decorated with the bas-relief of a mammoth. The mammoth is roughly sketched, and it displays three diagonal notches. More signs are to be found elsewhere on this object. The perforation broke while the pendant was still in use as a necklace. Perhaps that was why the amulet got lost. On the reverse side, there are red-yellow coloured traces of red ochre (ferric oxide).
