Finds from the Vogelherd cave

Lion

Lion
Photo: Hilde Jensen, University of Tübingen

This bas-relief made from mammoth ivory is very impressive! The solid, heavy body with its strong muscular shoulder is covered with rows of dots, cross- and angular shaped symbols. With the head bowed and the ears laid back, it seems to be crouching. Originally, right after its discovery, traces of red ochre (ferric oxide) were observed on the surface.
