Finds from the Hohle Fels cave near Schelklingen Bird ![]() In the summer of 2001, an ivory carving of the body of a bird was discovered at Hohle Fels near Schelklingen. One year later, its head as well as the neck were recovered and fitted on to it. This is the oldest representation of a bird, very likely an aquatic bird such as the cormorant or the duck. The extended neck and folded wings suggest that the animal is either diving or flying. Engraved lines indicate feathers on its back. The legs are short and without any trace of feet. The figure is 33,000 years old.
